  • About a 1974.5 TR6

Hi. Forum newbie here. I am the proud new (3rd) owner of a 1975 Pimento red TR6 (aka Little Red). I pretty much grew up in LBC's. From 1967 to about 1982-3 I owned more than a few of them, including more than a dozen MGB's (7 roadworthy), a B with a GT6 engine transplant, a '64 Mini 'Woody' wagon, and a TR2A. I always wanted a TR6 when I was younger and now, after 25 years, I have one as a retirement toy.

My probing of the vehicle has raised some questions regarding it's actual model year, a nice thing to know when part shopping. I think it is actually a '74½, although it is registered as a 1975. The commission # is CF30120U which makes it a 1974½. The motor (#CF29831UE) does not have an air pump like the '75s and only minimal vacuum hoses and the car has the bumper boobs which I don't know when they started (74 or 75). Can anyone tell me whether I was right in thinking it is a '74½?

Also, the PO replaced the original head with a '73 head with no EGR valve. What effect, if any, will this have on the operation and/or performance of the motor? I'm mainly concerned about fuel buildup in the crankcase, or is that taken care of by the charcoal canister? Any performance hits?

I have to get to know my new toy as I just got her but I'm sure I will have more questions in the future once I learn her personality. Memories of the sounds and smells of past LBCs came flooding back the first time I took her for a spin and I look forward to many miles of smiles with her in the future, with some help from some friends.

    Dean,

Welcome to the forum. Glad to have you here.

Regarding the question about the year of manufacture of your TR6, you might want to spend the $50 and get one of those British Heritage Motoring Certificates (I think that is what they are called). There are some other members here that have ordered this document and it contains a wealth of information regarding your car such as date of manufacture, model year, port of entry, etc.

Welcome. You should not have a problem w/o the EGR. I have an early 74 which I removed the useless thing. Your carbs will evacuate the vapors from both the valve cover and the charcoal cannister via the hoses that interconnect them.
All those vapors, by the way, do not harm the carb as the vapors enter the carb on the engine side of the air valve, not affecting the main jet or metering needle. ken

          Hi Dean,

Are you fron turnsignals mouted under the bumper or on the front valance? This is another clue to the vintage of your car. A 74-1/2 will have the signals under the bumper.

Thanks to all for your replies and your welcoming. Cygan, the front lights (amber/white) are mounted on the bottom corners of the bumper.

              Greetings Uncle Fly

You will be pleased to know that Little Red is currently undergoing some engine restoration. We have noticed the head has been replaced, and it appears to be from a 72 not 73. In the process we discovered a cracked exhaust valve in cylinder 3, so we are replacing all of them as well as new rod bearings. The old ones were ok for the most part, though cylinder 1 had some scoring in the bearings but the journals all look nice and clean.

This car has really been a fun project for us to work on together, and we are excited to see what improvements will come from this restoration.

You're always welcome to come by on a weekend to see the progress. It'd be good to see you, its been too long.

              Sincerely,

              Ken and Graham.
