  • Petronix Ignition ...................................................

New TR6 owner here ............... general question. What is your experience with the Petronix Ignition vs. standard points? Is it worth it to make the upgrade? Have a 12V neg ground ballasted system. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I've had both, but I favor points and condenser....Since you have a ballasted ignition you will probably want to bypass the ballast resistor wire so that the Pertronix Ignitor gets the full 12 volts when the engine is running.

Same here as PB. Tried the Pertronix in my '73 (unbalasted ignition), but had stumbling issues when the engine was fully warmed up.
Switched back to points for that reason and because I like old school "tehnology).
However, I ran the Pertronix type ignition on my dear, departed 1985 XJ6 for over 10 years without issue.
It was vastly cheaper than the stock Lucas electronic ignition replacement parts.

Pertronix electronic ignition on my '72 when they were 1st offered, use to fail series of internal vertical magnets would fall out of position. Redesigned/engineered no issues (pertronix/flamethrower coil/red rotor) find on my TR6 keeps/maintain timing/tuned performance longer than points/condenser easy plug & play. Have couple back ups yet to use.

Had a Pertronix on my '76 for about 6 or 7 years with no issues. When I installed a rebuilt dizzy from British Vacuum in NH, it came with points, which are still in the car. Runs very well on points - set the Pert aside and have it for possible future use, but staying with points at this time.

I like my Pertronix myself. Had about 10 years. I have a 1976 and bought a matched system to work with existing wiring and pink ballast wire. You can use the older car version but need to bypass the ballast resister. If you follow the rules it will last a long time. Healthy Battery, healthy alternator to start with. Always disconnect the power from the coil when your messing around with your car - if you turn the ignition on without starting the car it can hurt the Pertronix system. Push the plug gap from .025 to .030. Starts great and reliably. I think the points help when the battery and alternator start to have problems. The system just keeps sparking till the end. The Electronic needs a healthy system to work correctly. Keep the points in the trunk just in case.

Tried it for a few years. Too many gremlins. Dizzy rebuilder saw erratic issues and replaced with points.

Been running points, quality coil, spec plugs and gap, advanced timing, ever since.

Idles smooth, pulls strong, runs great.

Car came with one so I left it in.

One day I left the key on in the run position for 5 minutes and fried it and the coil. Went back to points 14 years ago and have not adjusted them since.
