Original Shift Knob ?

I know it's an original shift knob, but I have never seen the black inlay on one. Supposedly a 20k mile car I just bought has it. Did someone paint it? Or is this the way they were? Thanks

I did paint the background black in mine, Mike, but unlike the 20k car you can still see the texture.

Here's my collection. The wooden one on the left, is what came with my 73. The chrome Amco knob is a period accessory.
The black, hard rubber knob is supposed to be the Euro version, the "TR6" a later aftermarket knob and the clinched spincter of mismanagement Leyland knob I got from TRF

I thought my knob had a black inlay as well until seeing these photos.

I'm assuming you're joking...but just so you know,I've only owned the
car a couple months, and just found that shift knob in a box of parts.

My car had a wood knob with the silver inlay. I will replace it because it looks like someone dropped it and it has a fairly large chip out of it. I wonder if the originals were wood or black leather covered. The catalogs seem to say the leather covered one are original. There is a wood knob under that leather covering. Wonder if it is just a case where the covers come loose and people just pull them off to reveal the wood knob underneath?

My '73 came with a black leather covering the wood. No paint around the numbers.

Hard to make out the details on the sales brochures, but I've seen a 69 single sheet sales card where it mentioned a leather wrapped steering wheel and matching shift knob
