Trunnion Finish

Were the trunnions originally painted Black or were they left with a brass finish? I have always shined them up during restorations because I think it looks nice, but the trunnions I just worked with had black paint on them. They are original to the car.

If you polish them to a brass shine, then spray with a clear lacquer, that shine will last a long time.
