  • Mecum Auction 2022 - Stupid Money and a TR

Sooo...... I've been watching, on and off, and 2 New/used 2021 Ford Broncos sold for $76K and $85K..... cars with an MSRP of under $45K! Just wait 6 months and they'll be selling for new at a discount!

And they mentioned a TR selling for north of $80K..... anyone know what model TR it was and was it worth the price?

From their web site there were 7 Triumph auto's that have sold. You can search and find the lots, but to see results you must first register. There is a 1962 TR4 that sold, estimate was $55-65K.

It was a TR4. My son, a car geek, has been watching the auction.

Clean, but not worth that price IMO. I only saw a few still pics my son showed me, but hey, its not an E-Type, no matter how hard I squint....

I can't stand to watch Mecum, but I do record and fast forward to the cars I'm interested in. A three hour show last me about 45 minutes tops. The restomods and unobtaniums are just not that interesting to me, and they've largely taken over the auction circuit. When I hear "presentation" used to describe a car it makes me sick. They're not $300.00 dinners.

Even doing that you can't ignore the absurd prices paid for some cars, and the ignoring of others.

That said, that $42,300 Rambler wagon was really nice.

Same here. The only Mecum auction I'll watch live is the Monterey sale.

Supposedly the TR4 that sold for 82,500.00 is this one that sold on BAt in 2021. White walls were removed.

Yep, it has the AAC grand national winners grill badge.

There is a TR5 in the Goodings auction starting this weekend expected to go for 6 figures.

The crazy prices may be across the board. From another website I frequent, I know the first gen Camaros have also skyrocketed on Mecum. It's getting to where the average Joe can't get into the game.

The Mecum announcers were saying that even the 60s T-birds are going up. Strange days indeed.

What I can't figure out is why anyone would bid two 2021 used Ford Broncos up to over $70K when it was, maybe $40k new..... I know they're in short supply but just wait 6 months and they'll probably be discounted.

I finally had a chance yesterday to watch the last 2 days' auctions.

The last 5 years have been a very good time to be wealthy. There's only so much investment capital that the economy can absorb, and with the pandemic raging the return on any consumer/retail/manufacturing investments will be minimal short term at best. So what do you do when you're among the idle rich, have had your taxes cut for the umpteenth time (to zero for some), you already own all the real estate* you want, and the cash is piling up in the upstairs den?

*Check out what's happening on the real estate front, especially in resort areas, if you think antique cars are getting too expensive. The two beachfront condos I rented 2 years ago have doubled in price since. A lot of them have been taken off the rental market, languishing unused as "investment properties".

Hagerty recently did a video on the TR6, expecting it to start going up in value,

Whether or not it will, who knows
