  • Tr6 wheels on a TR3? A couple questions

Hey guys! I’ve got some questions regarding the towing of a new to me TR3.

SO- I’m planning to tow dolly a TR3 a couple hundred miles home. Pretty sure the tires are toast as the car has not moved since the 70s. It has wire wheels. I’m thinking of bringing 2 fresh steel wheels from my 6 to mount to the rears just to get the car home. so my questions are:
1: are 3/6 bolt patterns the same?
2: if I remove the hub for the wire wheels is there anything extra I need to mount the steel wheels to the car?

    thanks everybody in advance!

Yep they’ll fit fine. Last time I tow dollied a 3, I replaced all 4 wheels w tr6 wheels & tires. The steering was locked up so I cannot attest to how well the tires will clear the wings IF turning. Bolt pattern is the same
So much rust, so little time

Does the car have overdrive? You may not want to tow dolly it if it does....You might have issues with getting the steel wheels on if the wire will hub adaptor lugs are too short...

Good point Tush, if it’s OD simply undo the 4 rear prop shaft bolts & secure the prop shaft away from the diff

The shorter lugs won’t be an issue with the tr6 steelies. Btw, you don’t really need to worry about replacing the fronts unless the 3 tires won’t hold air at all & you need to roll it?

All good news Gents- 4 corners all hold air, non OD trans but I'm going to pull the driveshaft regardless. Thanks you guys!

Why not rent an open trailer from uhaul? Inexpensive, less worry.

Uber I'd love to, but I'm hauling behind a Ford Transit Connect. The weight of the trailer plus the car is a little too much for the little van.

As long as you have something they like to haul everything with. Otherwise you’re looking at them renting you a truck too. I used one (1-way) to haul my 6 back from NY. Very nice trailer, BUT do make sure to check all 4 tires prior to rental. I had 2 bad front tires.

I was going to rent another for the trip to pu my 250, but their website no longer allowed me to use my Nissan Titan V8 4WD?!?!

I hope your trip goes well and that you enjoy your new project.

Last week I was running errands and I noticed ahead of me that a minivan had run into the back of a pick up in a left hand turn lane. I slowed to walking speed as I passed and I noticed the truck had no hood, and a second glance revealed that it also had no engine. Odd. Then I looked up the road about 100 yards and there was a parked pickup with four way flashers on, towing an empty trailer with one broken yellow ratchet strap. Case solved.

Will do Tush! This car was 35 years in the making... I was 15 when I first saw it and have been harassing the owner ever since. AND I'm dragging it home on my 50th birthday!!!!!
