  • Car Won't Start

Greetings- After storing the car for 5 months on a trickle charger, I tried to start it and it was dead as a door nail. All I heard was a click from what sounded like the starter (it's an aftermarket high torque starter). The battery is only a year old. I checked battery voltage which read 12.7v. Any suggestions as to what the issue is and how I can check?

    Thanks,

    Steve

    What year ?
Are you able to try this....with the transmission in 4th gear and the hand brake off can you push the car in either direction a foot or two....checking for the engine locked up or the starter stuck in the flywheel.

    70 that's helpful..means there's no starter relay.
Anything else not working...headlights, horn, heater fan ?

horn, lights, turn signals all work - will push the car tomorrow and see if that helps.

Any chance you have a battery cut off switch? If so, try opening and closing it or take it apart and clean it.

Sometimes giving the starter a good whack might help.

Also clean the connections at the starter.

If the starter is clicking then there should be power to it. The question is whether or not it’s enough power. Perhaps it has seized up. Do you have a spare to swap out and see if that makes a difference?

Check and clean the battery to body to chassis ground.

Well- looks like it's the battery. Even though it tested at 12.7 volts (at first) , just cranking it a few times evidently killed it so even lights wouldn't go on. I took the battery to an auto service shop for a deep charge- tech told me it it charged, but wouldn't hold a charge under load. It's an Everlast I bought this past April from Walmart , so it'll be replaced under warranty. If a fresh battery doesn't turn her over, then I'll start looking at grounds and the starter but I think it will solve the starting issue.
