  • Paint. 1971 TR6 paint code #17.

Went to an auto paint dealer today. They said they had no match for #17 Damson. I went back and brought in one of my doors. The interior panel is off so they could scan original paint from paint that was behind panel. They came up with a Dupont color, Dark Red, in the one step paint. It has a match rating of 6. Which dealer thought would be very close. Then I asked for a match in Base coat/ clear coat. The Computer came up with a GM(N America) in the color Garnet red. This one had a match rating of 13. Dealer says she would not recommend anything with a match rating above 12. Can anyone give me a better suggestion?

    Check around some more.
These all have paint codes: ICI, PPG, Acme & Dupont.
A body shop should be able to scan original paint and get a reading that will allow them to blend an excellent match.

I have gotten an excellent matched paint from PaintScratch.com (West Coast), but there are many other suppliers.
They should be able to mix up a one ounce sample for $20. or thereabouts.

The shop I went to is an authorized PPG store. but after they scanned my paint they gave me a Dupont and a GM color. They said it matched better than their PPG. I think I will have then mix up a sample and spray it on inside of door to check. Thanks for the suggestion. one other question. I plan on painting The insde fenders,Inside engine, inside trunk etc. Then send it off to a professional paint shop for outside body. What paint should I be looking for. One step and done. Or Base coat and clear coat 2 step method. This will not be an every day driver car. But a Park in the garage and drive on sunny afternoon type. Thank for your help.

Damson was a color that Triumph liked but apparently it was not a big hit with the NA customer base as it always seem to get painted out with BRG or...or..Yellow (uck! - don't start with me Brosky!).

Many damson repro's that I have seen are too brown to my eye. Here is what they used for my car and it is pleasing even if I would prefer something more on the Ultraviolet side of the spectrum.

              The paint is Spies-Hecker.

              MB536 - Dark Red - 321.6
              MB 525 - Blood Orange - 418
              MB 502 - Black - 433.2
              MB 501 White.- 437.8

This is for 16 oz. I dont know what the numbers mean but it should be possible to relative-ize them..
